Abstract:

Cape Verde is in a unique situation, geographically and culturally. This presentation will trace the relationship between Cape Verde's geography and culture, demonstrating that Cape Verde's isolation in the middle of the Atlantic and its legacy under Portuguese colonial rule has produced a cultural nostalgia, evident not just in the country's music and language, but also in the mindset of Cape Verdians, the majority of whom live outside the country.
